 Understanding Noongar Country and culture
The Noongar people are the traditional custodians of the south west of Western Australia, with a cultural history spanning more than 65,000 years. Their Country extends from Geraldton in the north, east to Merredin, south to Esperance and Albany, and along the coast back to Geraldton – covering a vast and diverse region.

The Noongar nation is made up of 14 language groups, each with a deep connection to local flora, fauna and landscapes.

Totems carry cultural significance and responsibility – whether it’s a plant, bird or animal, caring for these totems is central to Noongar identity and intergenerational knowledge.

The Six Seasons Calender

The Noongar calendar consists of six seasons:

• Birak: The season of early summer, typically from December to January.
• Bunuru: The season of the second summer, usually from February to March.
• Djeran: The season of autumn, occurring from April to May.
• Makuru: The season of winter, generally from June to July.
• Djilba: The season of spring, taking place from August to September.
• Kambarang: The season of late spring, from October to November.
